The maltings in Barber’s Yard were built in the 18th century on a riverside site in the centre of Hertford. They remained in use until the end of the Second World War and had survived to this date virtually unaltered. Acanthus LW Architects initially prepared a Conservation Plan for this grade II* listed building. This provided the basis for our proposals for adapting the maltings to a new viable residential use retaining and conserving the original drying kiln. Planning and listed building consent were granted in 1999 and the scheme was finally completed in 2005. It subsequently received an award from the Hertford Civic Society.
