McMullen & Sons Brewery, Hertford
The brewery was built in 1891 for the local brewers McMullen & Sons. It is listed grade II because it is a well preserved example of a compact Victorian brewery complex. Brewing ceased in 1995 and in 2006 the site was sold to Sainsbury’s plc for a new supermarket at the rear of the brewery building. We were appointed to repair the existing buildings and adapt them for a new life as a start-up business centre. The building also contains an exhibition space opening off the supermarket’s cafe which tells the story of brewing in Hertford and how the building’s design facilitated the brewing process. To this end some of the earliest brewing equipment has been retained insitu and conserved for display.
Following the completion of the repair work, the listed buildings were acquired by a private housing developer to obtain a second listed building consent for converting the brewery into seven contemporary styled apartments.
