Riverside school is a secondary special school accommodating 120 students in Haringey. Originally it shared facilities with the adjoining Woodside school, but when that school gained Academy status there was a growing desire to keep the two school’s facilities separate.
The aim of this £1m scheme is to extend the school to provide a new wing of arts based teaching spaces including facilities for music and art. This proved challenging with a highly constrained compact site. After analysing various options a first floor extension was proposed on the main entrance elevation facing White Hart lane. The addition enlivens the existing school facade and helps to signify the schools presence and its entrance. The design employs curved and angled walls to benefit acoustics for the music room and is faced primarily in zinc.
