Hospice in the Weald
This commission was won in a limited competition. The detailed brief included day care, home care and in-patient accommodation. The aims were to balance domesticity with the security of a competent medical environment. The relationship of the building to the landscape was particularly important. Rooms open out onto sheltered external spaces with wider vistas beyond. Use was made of ground modelling and water features to enhance the therapeutic quality of the landscape.
The building is in Pembury, Kent, and reflects the local vernacular of plain tile roofs, oast houses and stack brickwork.
The day care and administration parts of the building were subsequently extended by the practice in 2009, a new education centre was created in 2010 and we remodelled the grounds in 2014.
