This residential development comprising sixteen town houses and nine flats, brings a new identity to what is currently a hidden part of the historic town centre. Located within a conservation area, the development is designed in a series of small steps allowing it to nestle into its surroundings. One of the site’s key features is a large protected plane tree. It’s central location helps organise the development into two housing blocks and subsequently becomes the centrepiece of a new public space known as ‘The Level’, which connects the northern High Street with a new public library south of the site. The design follows key urban design guidance, respecting the building vernacular of the conservation area, but interpreting it in a contemporary manner.
